OSAKA EXPO 2025 PORTUGAL PAVILION

We are in Osaka’s Expo 2025 Portugal Pavilion, as a part of this exhibition-film, curated by Andreia Garcia and co-produced by Architectural Affairs and Canal180. This project brings together 23 Portuguese architecture studios “whose approach stands out for its responsibility, experimentation and territorial anchoring”.

YEAR NINE – CONFERENCE

The Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) hosts the conference “Year Nine” by Samuel Gonçalves, in an event organized by the Board Of StudentS @UPTEC – Science and Technology Park of University of Porto.

NEW PROJECT FOR THE CÁVADO RIVER GREEN CORRIDOR

SUMMARY was selected to develop the rehabilitation project for several public parks and a set of supporting buildings. This project covers an area of ​​45 hectares and will involve the participation of a multidisciplinary collective, including ADF, Floradata, Rita Guedes and Atelier BBV.

DOCUMENTARY “HABITAR” AT CASA DA ARQUITECTURA

The premiere showing of the documentary “Habitar,” directed by Joaquín Mora and produced by Canal180, filled the Álvaro Siza Space at Casa da Arquitectura. Dedicated to the city of Porto and starring a group of nine inhabitants, the film served as an introduction to the conversation under the theme “The House We Want to Live In.” This conversation brought together Joaquín Mora, Fátima Vilar, resident of the SAAL-Antas housing, and architects Pedro Ramalho and Samuel Gonçalves.

PUBLIC HOUSING – S. MARÇAL, OEIRAS

Start of construction – two buildings with 48 dwellings and commercial spaces, an urban park and new streets. The project consists of prefabricated three-dimensional modules with a steel structure, entirely finished in factory and later assembled on-site.

IN ACTION – HOW DO WE BUILD TODAY

SUMMARY integrates the conference series “In Action – How Do We Build Today,” organized by Ordem dos Arquitetos and curated by DepA. In these lectures and debates, one of the key paradoxes in contemporary architecture is addressed: the challenge of resource scarcity alongside the necessity to increase and accelerate construction.

POR EXEMPLO – DEBATE

Curated by Hinterland Studio, “Por Exemplo” opens up space for young Portuguese and Spanish architects to showcase their work and innovative thinking. Within this framework, SUMMARY presents its latest projects, including modular solutions for affordable kindergartens and public housing.

4 MODULAR KINDERGARTENS IN LISBON

As a result of high demand and high costs, Portugal is increasing its network of public kindergartens. This film explores one year of construction of four modular kindergartens in Lisbon.

BUILD: FROM HIGH TO LOW TECH – DEBATE

There are several paths to sustainability, “Build: From high to low tech” invites 7 architects to share their perspective on the theme. From digital fabrication to natural materials, this roundtable provides discussion around design goals and strategies. With the participation of Oficina Pedrêz, Branco del Rio Arquitectos, Jérémy Pernet, CRUA Atelier, Muro Atelier, SUMMARY, and moderation of Prof. Alexandra Paio.

COST-CONTROLLED HOUSING

SUMMARY is working with five Portuguese municipalities to develop cost-controlled housing projects. The studio has been developing and implementing modular and prefabricated systems to respond to the challenges of the housing crisis within the deadlines stipulated in the PRR – the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan. These social housing projects, which total 150 homes across the five municipalities, will be completed by June 2026.

As part of the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) ‘The question of Housing in NEB goes South – International Laboratory’, the BuildUp#3 addresses new ways of looking at housing, from the use of biogenic materials to prefabrication, with the participation of Guinée*Potin Architectes, Branco Del-Río Arquitectos and SUMMARY.

PUBLIC HOUSING – NO SILVER BULLET – DEBATE

Debate organised and moderated by Samuel Gonçalves with Álvaro Domingues, Helena Roseta, Joana Couceiro and Sónia Alves. In this debate a relevant analysis is made regarding Portuguese housing policies during the democratic period. Future challenges were also discussed: from new housing policies to the implementation of the housing basic law. Public Housing – no Silver Bullet is an event within In Conflict debates cycle and in partnership with Trienal de Arquitectura de Lisboa. In Conflict it is the Portuguese Official Representation at 17th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, and it is commissioned by Direcção-Geral das Artes.

FLOATING HOUSE PORTUGAL

Architecture students from different countries competed during the 2022 Summer School to build the best houseboat, the international Floating House Design Competition in the area of floating architecture developed by the Miami School of Architecture in partnership with Go Friday. SUMMARY was part of the jury team, with Veruska Vasconez, Manuel Collares-Pereira, Guta Moura Guedes and Eduardo Souto de Moura.

 

RADAR VENEZA – EXHIBITION

The exhibition “Radar Veneza – Portuguese Architects in the Biennale 1975-2021” at the Casa da Arquitectura – Portuguese Centre for Architecture, from curators Joaquim Moreno and Alexandra Areia, proposes the critical analysis of the forms that constitute the Portuguese presence in the Biennale de Venezia. Summary’s project “Infrastructure—Structure—Architecture” is part of this collective.

What opportunities and challenges does factory-made housing present the future of housing in London? Roundtables, viewpoints and interviews, have been combined with a call out for projects to produce this piece of research into factory-made housing. The outcomes of this have formed a publication, this exhibition and a series of events.

MAM’19 – FAST FORWARD

This edition of Maia Architecture Month focuses on a program that aims to think about the future of the city of Maia, where a group of emerging architects were invited to imagine, exhibit, discuss, reflect and revisit the architecture of the city of Maia in the year 2119 in a utopian and dystopian way. SUMMARY participates with the Virtual Reality installation “The Tunnel”, where it revisits the project for the N14 tunnel developed in 2004 by João Álvaro Rocha, in a prospective and provocative way.

SUMMARY was Workshop Leader for the semester-long “Scaffolding Project” – Academy of Fine Arts Kraków, in Poland.

ARCHITECTURE INSTALLATION – MAXXI, ROME

“What happens next (?)” is the proposal for the Young Architects Program competition in partnership with MAXXI, in Rome. For this competition, we were invited to propose a temporary intervention for a space for outdoor activities: a space for research and innovation, with particular attention to ecological issues, and recreational spaces.

EUROPEAN CENTER MUSEUM EXHIBITION – ATHENS, GREECE

The studio’s projects VDC, GOMOS#1 and Ci3 on display at the European Center Museum / Contemporary Space Athens.

TIRANA ARCHITECTURE WEEK – LECTURE

Modular pavilion project showcased in the “Work in Progress” exhibition at the Serralves Museum.

ITALO CALVINO’S INVISIBLE CITIES – EXHIBITION

Mirabilia invited international artists, architects, and designers to interpret Italo Calvino’s “Invisible Cities” into models/sculptures. Fifty-five cities are exhibited, bringing the book into physicality. The interpretations shown in Mirabilia elaborate on the relationship of space and written word. The show invites you to get lost through the doors and archways, catching surprises of golden fragments, and glimpses of the sky as specular reflections of water move with the breath of the wind.
