“The Reasons Offsite” is an intangible exhibition curated by SUMMARY.
The project presents a collection of significant buildings and construction systems in the context of the historical evolution of modular and prefabricated architecture.
This information is displayed in a virtual reality environment through VR viewing kits, which transport the public, spectator, or user to a 20×20 m virtual space where the panels and models are arranged. The objective of this project is to create a radiograph of the different phases of this evolution. Examples of various buildings are presented from the 17th century to the present, including projects by architects such as Jean Prouvé, Walter Gropius, Buckminster Fuller, Shigeru Ban, or MVRDV, side by side with completely anonymous others.
With the participation of:
– Pedro Ignacio Alonso
– Pablo Jimenez-Moreno
– Jorge Christie
– Yona Friedman
“The Reasons Offsite” also aims to point out or highlight the conflicts between prefabricated construction systems and traditional or common construction methods. Standardization vs. customization, machining vs. humanization, and science vs. art are examples of topics under discussion. These conflicts will be elaborated on through the views of Yona Friedman, Pablo Jímenez-Moreno, and Pedro Alonso. The contemporary context, with a growing urban population on a global and unprecedented scale, the greater demand and need for immediacy based on a lifestyle at the Uber/Ikea/AirBNB pace, and the technological sophistication we have reached, motivates “The Reasons Offsite” as a rediscovery of the concept of prefabrication, seeking to understand its history and foresee its future.
